Michelle Clements

Leadership and Management – Why Both Are So Important To Our Success

When Michelle Clements, as a young college student, took her first retail job 30 years ago because she liked fashion, she didn’t have an inkling that her passion for people would help create one of the best companies to work for in America. This year, Fortune Magazine rated REI 12th out of the top 100 best companies across the nation based on company culture, policies, unique practices and employee job satisfaction - and Michelle’s fingerprints are all over it.

Michelle discovered early on that she could go anywhere if she performed well and focused on pleasing the customer and her team. Still, it took her 15 years in store operations, beginning at the store level and working up through regional and district manager positions, before she hit her stride as a company executive. Along the way, Michelle learned what it takes to be a good manager and what true leadership looks like through the eyes of a workforce. According to Michelle, all of us have pivotal moments at work which shape our future. Where you end up has a lot to do with your ability to speak your mind, reveal your passion and embrace leadership beyond the veil of common myths.

Today, as SVP of Human Resource for Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), Michelle continues to expand her vision of company success through the development of innovative people strategies and the creation of great work environments. Biographical Information for Michelle Clements:

Michelle Clements is a working mom with a son and two daughters. She likes to run because it allows her to “lose herself” on the road and she is passionate about her job as Vice President of Human Resources for Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) where she brings of thirty years experience in the retail industry in both operations and senior HR positions. Michelle currently oversees REI’s company-wide human resources which includes recruiting, training and development, employee relations, compensation and benefits, diversity initiative, employee recognition programs, and REI’s employee service center. She is responsible for developing the long-term People Strategies for the organization. In addition, she serves as an Executive Sponsor on REI’s strategic Diversity Initiative.

August Breakfast

Our August breakfast is an annual, invitation only special event dedicated to recognizing and celebrating our volunteers. We will be back to our regular breakfast schedule on September 9th with Janis Avery, CEO of Treehouse, who will speak on the topic of: Challenge, Change and Creativity - How To Turn Life's Obstacles into Business Opportunities (or Opportunities for Growth).
