Each month at the WBE Breakfast we have an inspirational speaker. Thank you to all of our speakers! Our speaker for January 2010 was:
Discovering Heart and Meaning in Life and Work
According to Jan Levy of Leadership Tomorrow, if you feel like you’re faking it at work, you probably are. And you shouldn’t have to, because from Jan’s perspective, work has the power to fulfill your very soul. Each year, Leadership Tomorrow offers a select group of individuals the opportunity to participate in a year-long program designed to develop leadership skills with a focus on regional issues and community stewardship. As Executive Director, Jan oversees the awakening of individual purpose on a regular basis. And she has a few thoughts on what it takes to leap beyond the drudgery of unfulfilling work into that place where your heart sings.
Jan Levy is the Executive Director of Leadership Tomorrow, a civic leadership training program founded by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of King County. Jan is a graduate of the program and has served as its director for more than twenty years. Her diverse background includes professional dance, higher education administration, and, prior to joining Leadership Tomorrow, eight years at Washington Mutual Bank, where she held positions as Assistant to the Chairman and CEO, Officer and Manager of Student Loans, and Asst. Vice President for Lines of Credit. Jan has a deep commitment to community leadership development. She served on the Board of the Community Leadership Association (an international association of community leadership programs) for nine years, and completed her term as the Immediate Past Chair of the Board in 1999. In May, 2000, Jan received the “Preceptor Award” for excellence in her field from the Community Leadership Association. She is currently a member of the Seattle Center Advisory Commission (mayoral appointment), the Visiting Committee of Seattle University’s Masters in Non-Profit Leadership Program, and serves on the Board of Trustees for Temple de Hirsch Sinai. She is also the Co-Chair of the Century 21 Committee, a mayoral-appointed committee charged with recommending a new design plan for the Seattle Center and a former member and vice-chair of the board of the Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership. Past board memberships include the United Way of King County, the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, Puget Sound Camp Fire Boys and Girls, and the American Jewish Committee. In November, 2008, Jan received a “Woman of Influence” award by the Puget Sound Business Journal. In December, 2008, she received the “Spirit Award” from the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle. Jan was also honored by the Girl Scouts of Western Washington as their 2007 “Woman of Distinction.” Other awards include the “Community Mentoring and Legacy Award” from Women of Color Empowered, in September, 2007; and the “Executive Leadership Award” from the Executive Alliance, a member organization made up of the region’s non-profits, in June 2006. In January of 2001, The Seattle Times recognized her as one of the “Best Organizers of 2000” for the Puget Sound Region. |
