Each month at the WBE Breakfast we have an inspirational speaker. Thank you to all of our speakers!  Our speaker for June 2010 was:

Jensine Larsen

Breaking the Silence:  The Rising Voice of Women Worldwide

As a young freelance journalist covering indigenous movements and ethnic cleansing in South America and Southeast Asia, Jensine (Yen-See Nah) Larsen had a vision – to use the power of the media to unleash the creative human potential of women across the globe. She knew from the beginning that she had to speak, and soon after her return to the states, began sharing her stories with others about Burmese women who had lost everything but their passion for a better future.

Today Jensine is a social media expert and a recognized leader in the global women’s revolution. She has leveraged communications technologies to create an interactive global media company that connects women worldwide. Her publishing enterprise, World Pulse Magazine, is dedicated to listening to and promoting the unheard voices and unique solutions of women from around the world. With PulseWire, her interactive community newswire, women can speak for themselves and connect to solve problems. From web to print, Larsen has created a forum where women can converse, brainstorm, support each other and leap the barriers of culture, isolation, and poverty in order to create better lives, communities and futures.

Jensine Larsen comes to WBE to share poignant stories of how women’s lives are being changed. How technology is spotlighting atrocities, providing a means to talk about them and helping women unite and organize as they never have before. According to Larsen, for the first time in history, women are beginning to be perceived differently. With microfinance leading the way, women powered initiatives are proving that real change for women lies in entrepreneurship. Join us on June 10th to learn more about how this public dialog is uniting women all over the world and helping them create solutions to world problems.

Biographical Information:

Jensine (Yen-See Nah) Larsen founded World Pulse - a global media source that covers world issues through the eyes of women – at age 28, after working as a freelance journalist covering indigenous movements and ethnic cleansing in South America and Southeast Asia.

After successfully launching a print magazine, in 2007 Larsen turned her eyes to the future of communications technology in the developing world.  She pioneered an interactive global women’s newswire where women worldwide – including those using internet cafes and cell phones in remote and impoverished regions – can speak for themselves to the world and solve global problems.
Today women are speaking out from the ground in over 150 countries and connecting through World Pulse. Most recently Larsen has launched a new program that is training women in web 2.0 citizen journalism, empowerment and fostering a network of women citizen journalists from some of the most forgotten regions of the world.

An unstoppable social media entrepreneur, Larsen has garnered partnerships with the world’s top international women’s organizations and endorsements from global luminaries and visionaries. Jensine has appeared on NPR and AirAmerica and presented keynotes and panels at TED, Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurship, Bioneers, Digital Earth, WebVisions, Women in Technology International, and the Conference on World Affairs and more.

Holding a degree in Comparative International Studies from the University of Wisconsin Madison (1999), Larsen is also a Young Leaders Fellow with the National Committee on United States-China Relations. She was appointed to Portland, Oregon’s Vision Committee, which was established by Mayor Tom Potter to chart the city’s 30-year vision by listening to the visions of its citizens.
